Village Counter Talk

I am a village Sub Postmaster and with my wife I run a village shop and post office. We live with the changing trading conditions that confront the entire country. We live with the ever growing pile of regulation that the government has cast about with grim abandon over the last 12 years. What I hope to do with this site is reflect the things that I talk about with the people I meet. At its simplest it will be an occasion journal in our shops life.

Words of Wisdom

‘We have a real opportunity to be different, better than our competitors and grow our business together, much faster. We need to continue to develop our brand as partners and draw on the experience of our colleagues in Musgrave.’

Phil Smith, MD, Musgrave UK to the Londis Retailer Conference.

'We're not of course a charity, but we do believe that everyone deserves access to fresh, wholesome food they can afford. In our experience, if that's what you offer, in a clean environment with friendly service, people will shop with you'

Simon Uwins: Fresh & Easy Blog

'Losing magazine space to other products as independents switch from news and magazines to convenience is an insidious loss that should be taken seriously enough to devote as much ingenuity to the news supply chain as wholesalers are to diversification'

Guy Campos: Editor, Retail Newsagent

'So Cully may get a Tesco Supermarket….Some say this is good and some say it will "kill" the town centre. My only comment is that if the Town does suffer it won’t be Tesco’s fault, it will be ours. We all have a responsibility to support our local shops, even if we always don’t find it the cheapest or most convenient option.'

The Editor of St Boniface and Friends, News From The Pew, Cullompton

I've been noticed!

Vickie Woods, in the Daily Telegraph says:

'The Village Postmaster is a curmudgeon, and "Village Counter Talk" is one long enjoyable moan about the somewhat embattled job of keeping a business going in the face of desperate odds.'

Over the period that my wife and I have owned and run our business in a very pleasant village in Southern England we have suffered many crimes. These have included shop theft by children to the elderly with dementia, buglary, verbal abuse, distraction theft, price label changing and forged notes and coins.

I have been looking at the media reports on crime on our type of shop, community bases, newsagents, c-stores or Post Offices and will be regularly posting on the issue.
