This video graphically shows the worry and dispair that Sub Postmaster's, their families and the communities they serve feel when the Post Office branch is selected for closure. Terry O'Halloran has been leading the campaign and has even gone so far as to 'brick up' BERR. The Daily Mail covered the story:
'24 villagers from Langworth, Lincolnshire , had travelled to London to try to brick up the main door to Hutton's office to highlight the 'brick wall' they faced in their attempts to halt the closure of their branch. They stacked up 60 breeze blocks outside the revolving doors to the Department of Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform in Victoria Street, Westminster, as workers arrived for the day.'
The remarkable think about the protest, as CAPOC says there was very little other coverage.
The result of the second public consultation by the POL is this:
The majority of correspondence received during local public consultation in response to the proposed closure related to the distance to the alternative branches, the cost of using public transport and parking related concerns. Many people also mentioned the adverse effect on local small businesses, the local community and the local elderly population. A few people were concerned about the ability of the alternative branches to cope with the extra business and several people suggested that the village shop would be a suitable outreach location. A number of suggestions were made about where to host an Outreach service including a Mobile service from the church driveway or Memorial Hall grounds.
A full review of all the relevant factors has been conducted including the feedback from customers and their representatives during the local consultation period in relation to Langworth. In concluding this review Post Office Ltd has decided to proceed with the closure of Langworth Post Office but to continue to offer the community access through the provision of an Outreach service. The type of outreach service will be subject to a further 6 week period of local public consultation. Details of this consultation will be announced shortly.'
